Chronology
Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin, is trying to take over Gotham’s criminal underworld. Aside from a bat signal in the final shot of the season finale, we never got our Robert Pattinson cameo in “The Penguin.” In this short film, IMDb tries to answer: Where the hell was Batman?. Colin Farrell fought tooth and nail to get his version of The Penguin to smoke tobacco in The Batman (2022), but he failed. However, in his own series, the character is portrayed as an occasional tobacco user, preferring cigars.
I’ve never seen Farrell so invested in a character
An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. Appears in Graham Norton and guest stars: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). So the first episode is done and it was excellent.
He’s a New York gangster, a smartass
Sure, he wears a fat suit, but you’d never know. His posture, body language, voice, you’re immersed in the character and you see only Penguin. He’s not like any other live-action penguin on TV, Burgess Meredith or Robin Lord Taylor. He’s Scorsese’s gangster, but without the flowery language.
Very funny and highly recommended
The plot is simple, similar to Lord Taylor’s Penguin on the CW’s Gotham. Penguin is a middleman for a mafia organization. Up until now, he’s been serving his sentence, slowly rising through the ranks of the mafia, and then, with the fallout from Riddler blowing up the city’s sea wall and the death of his boss in this film, he sees a chance to move up in the world. Now begins the game of cross, double cross, and, I think, triple cross.
